Safety chains are used for exactly this kind of situation. They hook onto the holes on the vehicle's hitch receiver, which is bolted or welded to the vehicle frame. This way, should the ball mount detach from the receiver, the trailer's safety chains will still be connected to the tow vehicle. Safety chains should be checked over every time you tow and be securely attached and crossed in an X under the ball mount. Chains with latches or keepers are recommended over chains with just the S hook. In the event the trailer becomes uncoupled from the vehicle, the forward motion of the vehicle often helps pull the chains tight, keeping the trailer tongue slightly elevated. Wind resistance and road friction will generally start working against the trailer as soon as it detaches from the tow vehicle, helping to naturally slow it down. It is important to stay calm and avoid any sudden maneuvers. Instead, steadily slow down and pull the trailer to the side of the road, bringing both the vehicle and trailer to a stop. To help guarantee the trailer slows down during one of these situations, it is always recommended to have an emergency breakaway system installed on the trailer in addition to using safety chains. The emergency breakaway cable should always be connected directly to the tow vehicle and NOT to the ball mount, the hitch, or the safety chains.

The Continuum should always be installed directly in the vehicle's receiver and the head unit and spring bar assembly are only compatible with the drop shank included in the Continuum hitch kit. However, we can confirm that our team is currently working on a version with a longer shank. Release date tbd.

Absolutely. We've conducted testing with SUVs and have found no issues when using the Continuum with these vehicles. In regard to towing with an SUV vs. a truck specifically, it will simply come down to the tow rating, size/weight of the vehicle, proper towing tires at the correct pressure, etc. As long as you're mindful of your vehicle manufacturer’s weight ratings and following all of the towing guidelines outlined in your owner’s manual, you should have a smooth towing experience using the Continuum with your Grand Cherokee.

Not an issue. The Biker Bar simply clamps onto the frame (neoprene lining prevents scratches). The adjustable clamping bar is always removed when not trailering.

We totally understand why some might feel that way at first glance! The Continuum initially seems a bit complicated, but it was designed to make hitching-up as easy as possible while guaranteeing precise control over the amount of weight distribution. Unlike other weight distribution hitches where you may need tools and washers to make adjustments or even different bars should your trailer weight change, the Continuum keeps things simple. We agree! It's crucial to know the max weights and then do due diligence to determine the actual weights of the tow vehicle and trailer before hitting the road. To guarantee a comfortable and safe ride, it's always recommended to tow well below these max weight ratings. A rule of thumb is to aim for at least 10% below the max towing capacity to cover your bases for any miscalculations and shifting loads. But it's never a bad idea to play it even safer and stay below that 10%. Every tow vehicle and trailer will have different ratings and handle differently. Should a driver notice absolutely any difficulty steering or decreased responsiveness when braking, and/or if they're pushing anywhere close to that limit, it's time to look into upgrading the tow vehicle. That said: after years of towing different tow vehicle and trailer combinations and testing our hitches, we've learned that even if you're well within the proper towing capacity, a number of factors can impact your trip - like a soft suspension or bumpy roads. Because of this, we've seen that larger trucks can also benefit from using weight distribution hitches with built-in sway control.

Great question! A weight distribution hitch will not reduce tongue weight or allow you to tow beyond the capacities of the vehicle. The tension on the spring bars essentially lifts up on the tongue, "holding" some of the tongue's weight. This causes a shift in the distribution of the weight off of the vehicle's rear axle to all of the axles in the entire setup. Typically though, we can verify that there is often a second higher capacity for the hitch for when weight distribution is involved. As long as you have confirmed both vehicle and receiver hitch rating is stated as 1000 lbs when using a weight distribution hitch, then you should be safe to tow the 700 lb tongue weight with a WD hitch installed.

The weight transferred to the trailer axle will depend completely on how your truck and trailer are set up. Due to the way a WD hitch works, some of the distributed weight will be put on the trailer tires, but this weight is negligible.
